Farmington

A Rich Historical Tapestry

Incorporated in 1645, Farmington is one of Connecticut's oldest communities. Originally known as Tunxis Plantation, it earned the moniker "Mother Town" as it gave rise to several neighboring towns, including Avon, Bristol, and New Britain. The town played a pivotal role in the Underground Railroad during the 1800s, earning the nickname "Grand Central Station" for its active participation in aiding escaped slaves. Notably, in 1841, Farmington residents provided shelter and education to the Mende Africans from the Amistad, reflecting the town's longstanding commitment to social justice
